Mayor's Inappropriate Action Overshadows Community Triumph |

Saturday, 09 December 2006 |
Early Thursday December 7th, fifteen young men and Ben Hernando set off to run a marathon in Las Vegas. Their efforts over many months to overcome trials and troubled lives were inspired by Ben Hernando, a marathon runner himself, who thought that these children needed to go on a different path. All the skills to run a marathon can be used by anyone who wants to do something different: hope, faith, determination, planning and dedication. He said, "I want them to see that there is another world outside of 5th and 6th Avenue----that there's another place that is very nice. So hopefully they will open their eyes and say, 'Hey, I can do this, I can go to places, I can find a good job.' "

Leaked Documents from Status of Women Canada |

StatusReport.ca has uploaded a Status
of Women Canada (SWC) PowerPoint presentation which indicates exactly
what Prime Minister Harper and Minister Beverly Oda mean when they
mention “streamlining” and “consolidation” to SWC.
SWC insiders say they handed over the document because they want
to keep the public informed about "what’s happening in there."
They said that until Tuesday, November 28th, they knew nothing about
what would happen to SWC until they heard it in the media. Then, two
days before Oda's announcement regarding reductions to “points of
service” (regional SWC offices) from 16 to 4, staff were informed
of the deep changes about to befall SWC. This was accomplished
through the use of the PowerPoint presentation and intended only for
an internal audience.

Exclusive to ActUp
“It’s a yes.” At 8:10 p.m., after 450 days, the Sobey’s strike was over. The result of the ratifying vote was announced with little fanfare to workers assembled in the basement of the RWDSU union hall. “You gotta go in (to Sobey’s) with a smile on your face and look ‘em in the eye. We’ve won this fight and we’re happy with that,” said Susan Butson, Chief Steward.

The Leader Post recently reported glowingly on a new Bridges to International Learning project. We had the story months ago, and added some good critical questions to the mix: who owns the research results, why do students have to sign a confidentiality agreement for their homework, and are companies getting free labour? The report by ActUp contributor Michael Bell is worth reading again. Read IQ Rip-Off

By John W. Warnock November 30, 2006
Last night 350 people braved the cold in Regina and went to hear Richard Heinberg, one of North America’s top experts on the oil and gas industry. He presented data showing the disappearance of oil and natural gas on a world wide basis and in particular in North America. He pointed out that the best geological research in Canada predicts a fairly rapid decline in natural gas production in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. He asked: “What are people in Saskatchewan going to do as the supply of natural gas declines and prices start to dramatically increase?” Click on 'read more' below for a full report on his talk.
Heinberg: The party's over, Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Peace Centre in Kigali, Rwanda, will be dedicated to Regina volunteers who raised funds for 1,400 wheelchairs for conflict victims. The dedication ceremony will take place next week, says Terri Sleeva, a Regina disability rights advocate. "Every $110 donation purchases one wheelchair," says Sleeva. "There is a huge need for simple, sturdy wheelchairs." During the conflict in Rwanda millions of civilians had their feet cut off, and many are still waiting for chairs, she says. This Saturday morning, Nov. 18, the Wheelchairs for Rwanda Project will hold a fundraising pancake breakfast at City Hall. For information about tickets, call 545-7378.
