rights and democracy book drive - 2005/10/18 20:00 This year, The Rights and Democracy Delegation at the University of
Saskatchewan
is taking action to promote literacy and access to information. To focus our
energy, we have chosen the theme of “Literacy at home and abroad.”

Frederico Mayor said: "Illiteracy is not a fact of life but a consequence
of
inaction on the part of governments and societies. Its consequences are
pervasive and powerful. If we wish to combat poverty, injustice and the
violence that so often results from them, we must begin by mobilizing minds
through education and literacy..."

Our delegation is currently organizing a book drive in collaboration with
the
Women’s Rights in Afghanistan Fund (WRAF). The books will be for Kabul
University’s library. According to WRAF:

“unfortunately, Kabul University did not escape the physical and
institutional
destruction that wreaked havoc on Afghanistan for the past 25 years of
violent
conflict. Building the capacity of Kabul University to contribute to
building
the country’s human capital is an investment in peace and human security.”

October 24th marks UN day, the day the United Nations Charter was passed and
in
conjunction with that we will be holding our book drive. It will take
place
on October 24th and 25th 2005 in Lower Place Riel from 8:30am till 4pm and we are seeking a
wide
variety of: textbooks, novels, and dictionaries (in Farsi and English).

If you have any questions about this upcoming project or would like to be
involved please contact: rightsanddemocracy_uofs@hotmail.com. Please find
the poster attached, with additional details of the event.
