The
occupation of Wall Street is now in its third week. Thousands of people
have worked and fought for it, have given it their time, their bodies,
their ideas, their blood. People have used their bodies as shields, sent
letters of solidarity, marched, slept out, donated, tweeted, and more.
There are thousands more still who have not been with us, whether
because of geographical reasons or because they are busy struggling
elsewhere.
I
have been involved, in some way, with the occupation on Wall Street
since the first planning meeting a number of months ago, and I have been
out there almost every day since the occupation actually began, though
mostly keeping quiet and working on the sidelines – often critically.
In 2010, RPIRG and SCIC teamed up to offer the first annual Generating Momentum: Activist Leadership Training Camp. Held at Lumsden Beach Camp, organizers and participants traveled from across Saskatchewan to discuss a variety of issues and share skills to equip themselves to make change in their communities.
It was amazing, so we are doing it again. The 2nd annual Generating Momentum will be held from Friday, August 26 - Monday, August 29 at the Calling Lakes Convention Centre, near Fort Qu'Appelle. There is room for 50 participants and a new slate of programming. You should be there!
Last year's camp. Click on 'read more' below for more info about this year.
Governments bear a very
important responsibility to ensure security in and around events such as the G20
Summit. They have an equal responsibility to enable and protect the rights
associated with peaceful protest, particularly freedoms of expression, assembly
and association.
That’s why Amnesty Canada is
calling for an independent review of the security measures used before and
during the G20 meetings in Toronto.
A workshop exploring theatre for community engagement will be held June 10 in Regina. If you would like to explore issues of power and the "isms" (racism, linguicism,
sexism...) through the lens of the theatre of the oppressed, rejuvenate your
active spirit, and develop/strengthen community alliances, then this is the
workshop for you. This workshop was created for community organizers,
facilitators, activists, and educators as well as individuals who are seeking to
become engaged and active within the community. You do not need to have previous
experience with community development or organizing in order to participate. The
workshop will be led by Dr. Warren Linds, a former Regina resident who now teaches at Montreal's Concordia University. Write Comment (1 Comments)
