The province’s largest labour organization is calling on all union members, wage earners and friends of working people to boycott the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa in Moose Jaw.
The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour says until the current dispute between employees and management at the spa is brought to an acceptable conclusion, workers and responsible members of the public will be asked to stay and eat at other facilities.
The Federation of Labour points to a number of unfair labour practices by management of the spa as justification for the boycott.
The spa managers refused to seriously negotiate on wages, making only one take-it-or-else offer, which contained no increase for some classifications. The bosses also refused to deal with requests as simple as setting up a system to permit employees to ask for days off. The SFL notes that the union representing the spa employees has filed charges with the Labour Relations Board involving harassment of workers, improper communications and offering raises to employees to entice them to cross their own picket line. SFL president Larry Hubich said, “We are asking all responsible citizens of Saskatchewan to avoid the spa until the bosses begin to treat the workers better”. The SFL is also asking the provincial government to remove spa CEO Deb Thorn from the Commission on Improving Work Opportunities for Saskatchewan Residents, which will begin work shortly on issues affecting part-time, low-income and vulnerable workers. “It’s difficult to imagine that an employer who would engage in the kind of tactics we’ve seen used at the spa would be a neutral and fair representative on the commission,” Hubich concluded.Only registered users can write comments.
