Striking RWDSU members marked a one-year milestone this weekend with burgers, hot dogs and messages of solidarity at their south Albert Street picket line in Regina. Marvin Meickel, Saskatchewan Federation of Labour treasurer, called on the Mayor and council to make some strategic phone calls to help bring Sobeys management back to the table. He also called on Premier Lorne Calvert to introduce anti-scab legislation in the next session. Congratulating the some 100 supporters who joined the line that day, Meickel concluded: "The longer the line, the shorter the strike."
For a report from the picket line, see "News From the Sobeys Frontline", below.

Signs of the times Written by Guest on 2006-09-18 12:48:19 Sure would be nice if the picketers would CARRY their signs and stay in compliance with the City Bylaws. | Why? Written by Guest on 2006-09-20 18:21:34 Tell me why should they carry their signs and what's this about City Bylaws? | 9881 says Written by Guest on 2006-09-20 22:38:26 See: http://www.regina.ca/content/info_services/bylaws/signs.shtml Seems pretty black and white. Union says its an infringement of freedom of expression. That is incorrect as the bylaw does not outlaw signs, it simply says they cannot be placed on civic property. If the union CARRIES them, they are legal. Enforce the rules, and enforce them equally! | Sobeys Written by Guest on 2006-09-21 14:14:51 Thats what we need laws to tip the scales even further in favor of the unions. What happened to democracy? The so called scabs have every right to go to work, after you have been out for 12 months you might want to reconsider the common sense you are using. This is a RWDSU power strike and has nothing to do with the workers. And yes the rules are not enforced equally. | Charge Us Written by Guest on 2006-09-21 22:32:10 The city has refused to write us (I'm a striker) a ticket for our signs, instead they play silly games trying to take signs when we arn't looking. The city is clearly afraid to fine us and have the bylaw challenged in the courts as resricting our charter rights. | Read your charter Written by Guest on 2006-09-22 00:30:07 Read your charter, your rights are not infringed. The law does not ban your signs, it simply says you cannot place them on city property. You are more than welcome to carry them, and you will be in compliance with the law. Please feel free to call 777-7000 and ask for bylaw enforcement to come down and deliver you a ticket. If they refuse or do not come down, please continue to call them. We, the citizens of South Regina have been calling asking the City to enforce the law. Mind if I quote you in my next complaint to Bylaw Enforcement? Nothing would give all of us more pleasure than to give you your day(s) in court. Oh, by the way, the bus should be moved every two hours. See: http://www.regina.ca/content/info_services/bylaws/large_cars.shtml Be sure to call City Hall Clerks office and request the entire Bylaw 9900. There is an interesting clause in there that prohibits parking on the same side of the street after the two hour parking period is up. I don't think the City is afraid to fine you as much as its an inside union brother or sister using their office inappropriately. Can't wait to hear how the candidates for City Council feel about that.
| Written by Guest on 2006-09-22 07:03:11 Wilson, shut the fuck up. | Written by Guest on 2006-09-22 08:17:42 Oh thats a great debate point "shut the fuck up" wonder why the strike has lasted 1 year. The city should drag that purple bus to Ipsco so we never have to look at it again. All this strike is doing is having citizens from every corner of the city drive across town to support the good people of Sobeys. | Bus and IPSCO Written by Guest on 2006-09-22 08:49:47 Too bad that the comment about taking the bus north and melting it down wouldnt work - all the "brothers" of the RWDSU members couldnt in good faith, put an end to the bastion of freedom and liberty - the old purple bus. Oh wait - I have seen dues paying people in the store - guess that an empty stomach skews the real facts about solidarity - hard to have a conscience with an empty belly - shouldnt all union folks be staying out of any grocery store in a show of their ability to shut down any commerce in the province? Oh - I guess thats when it only affects you, otherwise there would be a lot of skinny sympathizers walking around - not gonna happen! Pass the potatoes - and none of those non union ones from Lumsden. | Skinny Union folks? Written by Guest on 2006-09-22 10:40:07 I dunno about 'Skinny' Strikers walking. The Big Shop Steward hasn't slimmed down much, a year of walking and nary a pound off her. Despite her statement in the Leader Post that she has 'cut back' her budget, I suspect she hasn't cut the food bill by much. | Charge Us 2 Written by mrk on 2006-09-25 00:44:12 Sorry to let you know but it's not my charter is every CITIZENS charter. (even you Wilson) As we all know there are alot of bylaws on the books, some are payed more atention too than others, be they sign and parking bylaws, or maby the noise bylaw the Rolling Stones will be breaking in one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Western Canada, or ones that protect low income renters from slum landlords. It's kinda funny how the guy with the bigger bank account seems to have the laws/lawmakers (mayor and council) working for him? RE:9881 What if you are physicaly unable to carry a sign? Should your constitutional right to freedom of expression be limmited??? | Able to protest Written by Citizen Wilson on 2006-09-26 19:21:40 I can think of many folks who would might be insulted by such an attitude. Where you see DIS-ability, I see challenges to be over come. Where you see a person with a disability, I see the person as a whole. I know of one person challenging candidates to 'spend a day' in a wheel chair. Talk about a creative protest! (and tip of the hat from Citizen Wilson for doing so) Nothing wrong with weaving a sign through spokes, or...as I saw on the news, sponsorship as a hub cap. And if I were walking the line, I'd at least offer to carry a sign for my afflicted brother or sister. Shame on you for limiting expression by not offering as well. |
