Injured workers urged to come forward PDF Print E-mail

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business and the Chamber of Commerce are using a Workers Compensation Board review hearing to call for weakened benefits, and the elimination of coverage for stress, occupational diseases and chronic pain. Labour organizations are calling on injured workers to step forward and testify at the hearings, which are still accepting submissions.

<><>The employers are also calling for ending support for the Occupational Health and Safety Division, and replacing the division with Safety Associations. They want workers to be held equally responsible for their health and safety, and are requesting a $1,000 fine for workers deemed to have given false information.

In a press release, SFL president Larry Hubich criticized 'blame the worker' approaches and called for a system that is more responsive to workers' needs. "One injury or one death is one too many, and Saskatchewan's record to date has not been great," Hubich said. The SFL is calling for better accident prevention and more streamlined claim servicing, among other things.

Although the formal submission deadline was August 31, the review committee is still accepting written input from the public.
