From Turning the Tide - Local News Mailing List: Dear Saskatoon community members, This email contains tools for educating people in our community about what Don Atchison and the current city council have been up to for the last 3 years. Too often when election time comes around, people forget the damage that the government has done over the past term. I believe that it is a good idea to remind each other so that we do not make the same mistake of re-electing a poor civic government. Thank you for reading and taking action. John
******************** Ditch Atch In 2004 people from across Canada voted Don Atchison “Canada’s Craziest Mayor”. Let’s NOT RE-ELECT him. ANTI-DEMOCRATIC Set a standard for closed-door meetings on critical issues; shutting out the public from decisions on issues such as development and policing. IRRESPONSIBLE After one of the largest police scandals in Canadian history (Aboriginal freezing deaths), fired the one police chief who took accountability for those actions, seriously damaging relations with the Aboriginal community in the process. Tried to pay for a traffic interchange for the second East side Wal-Mart with public library money. Threw out a $125,000 third-party publicly-funded development study and chose to listen to Wal-Mart’s developers for advice on Saskatoon’s growth. UNACCOUNTABLE Ignored citizen concern about riverbank development, privatized a key piece of riverbank property (Gathercole Site) and sold it off for half of its market value. Politicized the Saskatoon Police Board by removing its chair and installing himself as its overseer. NEGLECTFUL Bumped the East-side Stonegate big box development ahead of the West-side Blairmore development. Overdeveloping the East side, while neglecting the West side. Watched as the city centre’s last remaining grocery store closed, leaving thousands of seniors and poor people without accessible healthy food, and offered no solutions. Neglected existing roads and infrastructure in favor of urban sprawl. ARROGANT Suggested that anyone serious about talking to him wear a shirt and tie (presumably purchased from his menswear store?). Regularly treated any citizen raising concerns about council’s decisions with contempt. 3 YEARS IS ENOUGH THIS ELECTION DAY - OCTOBER 25 - EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE THROW OUT DON ATCHISON AND EVERY COUNCILLOR WHO SUPPORTED HIS RECKLESS AGENDA.
