Thoughts on U.S. election PDF Print E-mail

The past few years there have been many moments when an activist questions the value of their acts: a gathering of ‘a way too small group’ protesting the killing in Iraq; a single letter written to some politician asking for their support; a meeting poorly attended to plan some event; attending a lecture or a speaking event to hear someone talk about what is wrong in this world; an article or poem posted on the internet; a single candle lit in your window; carrying a sign on a picket line; signing the seemingly endless online and paper petitions or simply joining some group that seeks your help for their cause. We all know these seemingly unnoticed moments when we question why or what. Does it really matter? We all want to make a difference, to do something to change the world for the better, to bring peace or justice or freedom to someone’s life.

This morning, the sun shines, the weather is abnormally kind and the air feels friendly in this little city. It feels like a day that deserves celebration. Is it a coincidence that this day is also the morning after one of the greatest moments in world history - the day after the most powerful, arrogant and violent man we have ever had to deal with suffered his first of many dramatic defeats for his actions.

The electoral defeat of George W. Bush’s party and the loss of his hold on the most powerful state in the world reflects the value of those seemingly insignificant actions.

Make no mistake about it. In Regina, Moose Jaw, Estevan, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, in Saskatchewan and every Province of Canada, in every country of this world where a citizen has done something to speak out against this man’s aggression, your private celebration about last night’s vote in the US validates every moment you have spoken out. There is justice for those who seek it and who speak it and who walk it and who pray for it. Unprecedented in world history, millions have been heard daily and have acted in concert with one single purpose – to weaken this man’s power on us all. This morning, take a deep breath of this fresh air, this gift, and know that you share with millions that breath……and savour the flavour of this day. Remember and embrace the taste of the human spirit when its voice is finally heard.

So where's the party at? :grin

I definitely punched the air for joy today, twice: First when I saw the election results (the dems are 1 seat away from winning the senate now too), and then when I heard Rumsfeld resigned. It is a bright new day today.
    Celebrate good times, c'mon!

And I am thankful for each and every American who marked their ballot against Dubya. And to you, too, Larry, for the reminder to celebrate! :grin
