Leaked Documents from Status of Women Canada PDF Print E-mail

StatusReport.ca has uploaded a Status of Women Canada (SWC) PowerPoint presentation which indicates exactly what Prime Minister Harper and Minister Beverly Oda mean when they mention “streamlining” and “consolidation” to SWC.

SWC insiders say they handed over the document because they want to keep the public informed about "what’s happening in there." They said that until Tuesday, November 28th, they knew nothing about what would happen to SWC until they heard it in the media. Then, two days before Oda's announcement regarding reductions to “points of service” (regional SWC offices) from 16 to 4, staff were informed of the deep changes about to befall SWC. This was accomplished through the use of the PowerPoint presentation and intended only for an internal audience.

The document contains 13 slides, one of which is a chart, and is available at the StatusReport.ca website. A pdf version is also available.

According to Pam Kapoor and Audra Williams, the founders of StatusReport.ca, the bullets and charts "confirm that the Policy Research Fund will be discontinued, which means SWC will no longer commission or fund independent research/analysis on gender policy. On page 10, we find what dramatic changes are slated for SWC’s communications policy, thanks to the budget cut by Oda: media monitoring will be outsourced; limited public and stakeholder consultations; limited information/promotional materials. On page 12, we see a table showing how all the reduced money will get distributed in the new budget."

In their estimation, the document reflects "how the federal government feels about the importance of serving, analyzing, and advancing women’s equality in Canada. So gross."
