Violence in Guatemala
will be present speaking on her work advocating for women’s rights and the use
of international conventions like the UN Convention on the Elimination of All
forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) to organize for change at a local
level. A representative from Immigrant Women of Saskatchewan (Regina Chapter)
will be discussing local strategies for working on women’s rights.
The Guatemala Network for Non-Violence was formed in 1991,
in reaction to a high profile murder.The work of the Network was key in achieving the creation of the
National Coordinator to Prevent Family Violence and Violence against Women, and
the Coordinator’s National Plan to Prevent Violence.Giovana Lemus is the coordinator of the
Network for Non-violence and sits on the National Council for the Prevention of
Violence - a mixed government-civil society group.

Development Project. At this year’s breakfast, DOA project coordinators will
report on their work in Uganda, Malawi, Ghana,
South Africa, and Nigeria as well as planned projects in Zambia and Sudan. The overwhelming conclusion is that economic and social
empowerment for women is vital to breaking the cycle of HIV/AIDS infection in Africa. Join us to find out why, and to support working
for change.
