    Women’s Rights: Engendering Change

    from the Network for Non Violence in Guatemala will be present speaking on her work advocating for women’s rights and the use of international conventions like the UN Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) to organize for change at a local level. A representative from Immigrant Women of Saskatchewan (Regina Chapter) will be discussing local strategies for working on women’s rights.

    The Guatemala Network for Non-Violence was formed in 1991, in reaction to a high profile murder. The work of the Network was key in achieving the creation of the National Coordinator to Prevent Family Violence and Violence against Women, and the Coordinator’s National Plan to Prevent Violence. Giovana Lemus is the coordinator of the Network for Non-violence and sits on the National Council for the Prevention of Violence - a mixed government-civil society group.

     In 2006 Daughters of Africa launched the HIV/AIDS, Women and Development Project. At this year’s breakfast, DOA project coordinators will report on their work in Uganda, Malawi, Ghana, South Africa, and Nigeria as well as planned projects in Zambia and Sudan. The overwhelming conclusion is that economic and social empowerment for women is vital to breaking the cycle of HIV/AIDS infection in Africa. Join us to find out why, and to support working for change.

    Rally for Rights

    The Legislative Building in Regina is the place to be on International Women's Day.

     In the midst of the 42nd Annual CUPE Saskatchewan Convention, delegates plan to move the mob to the Legislature. Guest speakers will rouse the rally with talk of Pay Equity, and other issues that still plague women in Saskatchewan and across Canada. Mark your calendars, and join us: March 8, 11:45 a.m., on the steps of the Legislative Building. Let's celebrate what women have accomplished, and work for a better Canada for ourselves, and a better future for our daughters.
