Campaign to Stop Hate Literature in Regina: A Call for Help PDF Print E-mail
Contributed by Amber Fletcher
Tuesday, 24 April 2007

Regina was recently struck again by a barrage of homophobic, anti-choice pamphlets. This most recent pamphlet distorts the facts to claim that "over half the homosexual population, 60%, carries the HPV virus." In fact, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, over 50% of people in general (regardless of sexual orientation) carry the HPV virus.

The pamphlet also shows a disturbing picture of a full-term fetus without a head. The photo is passed off as an aborted fetus, with zero proof given to the claim. It is a common tactic of anti-choice agitators to show pictures of miscarried fetuses, claiming that these have been aborted. In fact, very few abortions occur beyond the 12-week period. Most are performed in the first trimester, when the tissue simply disintegrates and there would be nothing left to photograph.

CFAN (Campus Feminist Action Network) has undertaken a new campaign to fight this hate literature. We feel that these pamphlets promote violence against LGBTQ2 (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, 2-spirited) people, and are harmful to women's reproductive freedom. In the future, for every pamphlet of this kind that decends upon our city, CFAN will make a donation to a local LGBTQ2 group, or to an organization that advocates for women's reproductive choice. This way, if the pamphlets continue to be spread, something good will come of it. If the pamphleting is stopped, we have also succeeded.

But we need your help. CFAN is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization with an extremely small budget. We need donations to make this campaign a success. Please contact for more information, or to donate. Also see http://cfanregina.blogspot.com for more information or to view the pamphlet.
