A round dance was the culmination of a two hours of fun, activities and food. The Al Ritchie Community came together on July 12 to eat, talk and enjoy some entertainment, kicking off a series of evening events in the inner city neighbourhood. Volunteers cooked hotdogs and hamburgers for a nominal cost to the hundreds of parents, children and elders present.
Then the crowd moved over to Gocki Park, just north of St.
Augustine School and south of the Core Ritchie Neighbourhood Centre.
There, the activities started with an aboriginal prayer. To the thump
of the drum and the song of the Kawacatoose Boys, the aboriginal
dancers and community officials entered the ring of people. Photo: Drum circle. Photo provided by Jim Elliott.
Following
this we were shown the skills and the performances of a number of
aboriginal dancers. We were then given the opportunity to see champion
hoop dancer Terrance Littletent dance. Then everyone was encouraged to
join in a round dance.
This event doesn't stop there. For the
next four Thursdays, starting on July 19, you will have the opportunity
to come out and see more entertainment and eat together. This week,
Robin Poitras of New Dance Horizons will be our premier performer in
the park. July 26 will have Kevin MacKenzie, a nationally known
storyteller, and Wigglepalooza. August 2 will have a community country
jamboree. The last day, August , will be a grand finale.
