Superstore Cloth Bag Initiative Comes Late to Plastic Bag Problem PDF Print E-mail
Contributed by Jim Elliott
Friday, 24 August 2007
In recent weeks, we have seen advertisements on the television that Superstore is going to get rid of a billion plastic bags and is encouraging people to purchase cloth bags in their stores.  What we are not being told is that the problem is much bigger than that.

In March of this year, the city of San Francisco banned the use of plastic bags by the end of September.  The furniture store, IKEA, began to charge customers 5 cents for every bag the customer uses back in February.  The plastic problem is on the agenda of almost every African country, said a UN official in Nairobi.  "The major focus is to promote rational use and disposal of plastic bags."  Some countries are putting levies on plastic bag production to encourage people to reuse them rather than trash them.  On the other side, South Africa produces 7 billion bags every year.  Kenya is churning out 4,000 tonnes of plastic bags a month.
