Some 2,400 university workers will begin a full scale strike today, after a failed attempt to bring management back to the bargaining table. The union had contacted the employers Wednesday through the conciliator assigned by the province, however after speaking to the employers the conciliator stated he would not reconvene talks because the employers' position hadn't changed. The union’s request for a fair wage increase and improved funding to
maintain their benefit plan “is more than reasonable,” said Don Puff,
president of CUPE 1975-01 University of Regina. "If the
employers had addressed these two issues by dropping their demands for
performance reviews and benefit cuts, we would be working out the
details of a settlement today, instead of preparing for a full-scale
strike,” Puff said in a media statement released last night.
