One of your correspondents wrote at length about the treatment which welfare recipients receive at the hands of our (soon to be previous) social democratic government. It appears obvious to me there many government jobs depend on an underclass of poverty which is generally unchanging. Social workers need poor people as a stepping stone up the civil service ladder.
I once got into a conversation with one of these people at a Regina bus
stop. I was bold enough, or maybe it was just foolishness, to suggest
that the current system of provision for the indigent should be
replaced with a guaranteed annual income.
As I expected I got the traditional " they would only abuse this"
baloney from this supposedly "left-of-centre" individual. That
generally summarizes what is wrong with today's New Democrats. In
practice their policies are not a great deal different from those of
many liberals. In fact even some Red Tories like Senator Hugh Segal
appear civilized in comparison. Personally I think there is very
little to be accomplished through parliamentary politics. That is the
reason many left wing people are now sympathetic to libertarian
socialism/anarchism. Rather than cross post I would invite anyone
interested in a more libertarian approach to take a look here.
