Under the title ‘Renewing Regina Public Schools,’ the Regina Public School Board has come forward with a plan to close 12 elementary schools and two highschools over the next 10 years. In case you should think that’s a bad thing, here are a few bon mots from their report: “The Renewal Plan emphasizes a commitment to choice.” “Choice within the Plan includes…opportunities for all younger siblings to benefit from the choice a family makes following a school merger, subject to two-year reviews.”
“The renewal process is designed to maintain and enhance the quality indicators that support continuous improvement." “The weight of evidence provided by these studies clearly favor smaller schools. But ‘smaller’ is a relative term.” On the closure list: Next year - Herchmer Stewart Russell Usher (highschool) Subsequent years - Athabasca or Argyle Jenkins Dieppe Haultain or Glen Elm Connaught or Davin McDonald or Coronation Park Martin (highschool) Coldwell Rosemont or Walker Kitchener Two School Board members voted against the plan: John Conway and Rhonda Parisien. Please continue watching this site for a detailed critique by dissenting school board member John Conway, to be posted later today.
