Dear Dr. Tomkins, Thank you for meeting with us before the student rally last week on Thursday November 29, 2007. We know that your scheduele was exteremely busy (with all that was going on with the strike), and we appreciate you taking time from you day to hear how student's are feeling their education had been compromised as a result of the strike.
Although the march was originally intended to be a neutral one, many
students and faculty demonstrated on the side of the CUPE workers.
After much research and discussion on the topic, we chose to
collectively support CUPE, because they were making a ceded effort to
come back and restore quality services for the students.
We
believe that the worker's fundamental rights to dignity and respect
were being compromised by the strike, and not enough attention was
being focused on the plight of the picketers. This is a reflection of
our society using the guise of individualism to further erode
collective movements (unions) and worker rights.
Student's
had largely remained uninformed and apathetic about the real issues at
play throughout the strike, and from this misunderstanding of the
facts, a predominantly pro-administration (and anti-union) stance had
afflicted our campus.
We felt that the university
administration, the Student's Union (URSU). and CUPE's own management
had not taken enough initiative or leadership in order to resolve this.
Though there were conerted efforts made by certain individuals from all
parties.
No matter which stance students took (generally
neutral or pro-CUPE), it was truly inspiring to see groups of students
rise from complacency and stand in solidarity with our workers, (some)
faculty, and each other. Hopefully this energy can continue as more
student's are using their university education knowledge as agency to
create positive change in our society, and have their voices heard.
Thank you for arbitrarily ending the dispute, and I hope you will join
us in warmly welcoming the CUPE workers back! We missed them, and are
glad to have them back creating such a positive learning environment
for all of us to enjoy. They truly are the heart of this university!
Yours Truly,
Jill Arkles and Billy Patterson (two active u of r students)
