US Congress Works on Climate Change Measures PDF Print E-mail
    Contributed by Jim Elliott
    Tuesday, 18 December 2007
It was only a mere 30 years ago when the Congress of the United Stated did what it did yesterday.  On December 13th, the Senate passed an energy bill that will increase the fuel economy standards up to 35 miles per gallon (7.3 l/100km) on average.  Many SUVs use approximately 10-12.  This change is a 40 percent increase in efficiency from current levels.
The Senate had other provisions in the bill to force electrical utilities to get 15 per cent of its supply from renewable resources but that didn't get through the congress.  They had other parts that would have eliminated huge government subsidies to the oil & gas industry but, you guessed it.  That didn't get through either.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) called the stripped down bill 'historic'.  Environmentalists are hoping for a greener presidency in 2008 and the opportunity to revisit the defeated changes.  That will only truly happen with a Green Party win.

With the strangle hold on funding campaigns of politicians that the energy industry currently has, there will be a lot of lobbying against any further changes maybe rolling back this bill.  The Democrats took just as much or more from the oil & gas industry as the Republicans.  At least the changes suggested by the original bill will come into force sometime with a Democratically controlled government.

this is why ralph nader runs against the democrats and republicans... they have the technology to implement ZERO emmissions cars charged by renewable energy sources... hybrids are still pumping atmosphere-eating carcinogenic and neuro-toxic fumes into the ecosphere....
