General Employees’ Union have been locked-out since November 6, 2007. On February 13, 2008 these workers will have been on the street for 100
days.
This milestone will be marked by a 100
Days of Resistance Rally at the SGEU office in Regina, 1440 Broadway Avenue,
from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2008.

SGEU
staff are members of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers’ Union (CEP)
Local 481.They walked off the job on November 6, 2007 to protest the employer’s demand for concessions at
the bargaining table.Within two hours,
the workers were officially locked-out.
“We will continue to resist the
anti-worker, anti-union tactics of this employer,” says Kelly Diebel, CEP Local
481 president.
“Employers across the province are
watching this dispute.If SGEU is
successful in forcing its workers to accept take-aways by locking them out, it
will give a green light to other employers to do the same.We are fighting not only for ourselves, but
for all unionized workers across Saskatchewan,” she adds.
The new Saskatchewan Party government has
already announced its intention to introduce essential services legislation,
and is poised to attack jobs in the public sector.
“How will SGEU leaders be able to stand up
to the government in the next round of bargaining when it has treated its own staff
so punitively?” asks Diebel.
CEP members have been without an agreement
for more than two and a half years.SGEU
leaders want to force CEP members to accept a wage package lower than the rate
of inflation, and give up existing sick leave entitlements. They refused to
agree to a special mediation process recommended by the Saskatchewan Federation
of Labour.
The SGEU
staff bargain collective agreements, advocate for SGEU members in the
workplace, administer SGEU’s Long Term Disability Plan, and provide many other
services, including education, communications and research.
