It is time for Regina Transit riders to stand up (even if there are empty seats on the bus) for clear visibility, in the interests of our safety, convenience, and comfort as transit users.
A number of Regina Transit buses have "vinyl wrap" advertisements that completely cover all bus windows except for the driver's windshield. These ads make it difficult to see clearly out the windows. It is time to urge our City Councillors and Regina Transit to remove all ads from bus windows.
It
is not hard to imagine poor passenger visibility leading to bad things
happening - getting off at the wrong stop in dangerously cold weather,
or young children or people with mobility problems being stranded a considerable distance from their actual destination.
It will no doubt be argued that these ads generate revenue. and help
keep fares down. Some of this revenue can be recouped by having
display ads on the exterior of the buses that DON'T cover the windows.
And ad revenue is not an excuse for treating passengers shabbily. After all, as the planet warms we are trying to get MORE people on the buses, not drive people away from public transit.
One might also argue that these bus wrap ads are a form of moving
visual pollution on our streets, which are already quite dominated by
large billboards on major thoroughfares. If we really love Regina, as
the Mayor likes to tell us we do, maybe we should eliminate garish and
tacky ads on wheels that detract from the beauty of our city.
I have contacted Regina Transit about this, and have been told that the use
of bus wrap ads will continue. I have asked to be on the agenda of
an upcoming meeting of the Parks and Community Services Committee of
the City of Regina, which oversees Regina Transit, to urge the removal
of these ads. I don't think that I'm the only bus rider who feels this
way. It is time to urge our City Councillors and Regina Transit to remove all ads from bus windows.
Riders of Regina's buses unite! We have nothing to lose but our visual disorientation!

I agree Written by shagya on 2008-02-19 10:41:28 The problem with this city is its layout which tends not to make puiblic transport very efficient. Perhaps someone should tell all the narcissists with their ugly 2500 square foot houses (on lots which are only slightly bigger than the building) to take a hike. Lots of luck I guess. AND for pure ugliness it's impossible to bet Victoria Square with its "dodge'm cars" road access and general lack of rationality. Even the shopping centres like Northgate and the Midtown seem reasonable by comparison but they were the products of nineteen sixties when these things just weren't as extreme. Of course back in those days we had the (in)famous Henry Baker as mayor and snow removal was even worse than it is now .... believe it or not. |
