On Tuesday, April 1 a Saskatchewan based, citizen powered
group called Sask Tar Sands Truth Project is holding rallies in Regina and
Saskatoon to confront the undemocratic and unsustainable ways that the
Saskatchewan Government is developing the tar sands. The event is one of
hundreds happening around the world as part on Fossil Fools Day - an
International Day of Action, with protests happening in Canada, the US,
Australia, China and Europe - to raise awareness about the negative impacts of
global fossil fuel regime.
“The unsustainability of the Canadian tar sands are of an
international significance that affects everyone through their causation of
climate crisis, water pollution, unabated environmental destruction, human
rights violations, job migration, and energy insecurity” says Regina rally organizer Eriel Deranger. “Due
to the magnitude of these realities, we cannot afford to ignore how the profit
driven approach to the tar sands is destroying our common future.” “The Saskatchewan Government is
making it clear that they are intent on developing the Saskatchewan
tar sands at a rate on par, if not faster, than Alberta”
says Saskatoon
rally organizer Christine Regnier-Gaudet. “Saskatchewan
has the lowest oil royalty rates in the democratic world and Brad Wall is going
around to oil conferences in Calgary, Washington, and New York
soliciting US
oil companies.”
“Oil from the Saskatchewan
tar sands will feed the US
oil addiction. The junkie’s share of the oil and profits will go across the
border and the people of Saskatchewan will be stuck with the negative impacts
from increased housing costs to destroyed forests” says rally organizer Jeh
Custer “It's time for Saskatchewan to
build a sustainable economy and transition off our fossil fuel dependence.”
The Regina Rally will get underway at 12:00pm at the
Saskatchewan Legislature (123 Legislative Building, 2405 Legislative Drive),
while the Saskatoon Rally will be going at 4:45pm Saskatchewan Government
Cabinet Office (315 22nd Street East). In Saskatchewan there has never been a more
critical time to organize tar sands activism than now. We hope to see you
there.
