How to freak out a Burmese general PDF Print E-mail
    Written by Trish Elliott
    Thursday, 29 May 2008
Did you know that Burma’s generals are highly superstitious? And that they are deathly afraid of women’s undergarments? They believe contact with women’s clothing worn below the waist, especially panties, will erode their power. The women of Burma know this, and that’s why they started mailing their panties to the regime beginning in October. And now they’re asking sisters around the world to do the same.

These men are afraid of your undies. Lanna Action image.

I challenge Saskatchewan women, wherever you are, to send in your panties, so the generals know women around the world are mocking and hexing them. It’s easy:

    1) Clean out your drawers,
    • choose some panties,
    • Write a message of solidarity on them (for example, « Solidarity with Burma », « Oust the Military Regime! » « Take that, Than Shwe! » …) and/or print the flower-shaped sticker displaying the leaders of the military regime (available on Lanna Action for Burma  http://lannaactionforburma.blogspot.com/). While you’re visiting the Lanna Action site, you can learn more about the situation directly from women from Burma – and play a cool online game of firing panties at generals. It is the Lanna Action group - representing a coalition of Burma women's groups - who created the campaign.

    2) Send your package to the representatives of the military junta in Canada :
Embassy of the Union of Myanmar
    85 Range Rd, 903
    Ottawa (Ontario) K1N 8J6

    4) Make an online donation for the victims of the humanitarian crisis (link on www.pantiesforpeace.ca) or send a cheque to this address, with a mention saying  ‘Burma Campaign’ on the cheque:
    Rights & Democracy
1001 de Maisonneuve blvd. East, #1100
    Montreal (Québec) H2L 4P9

Funds will be sent directly to group working with victims of the humanitarian crisis in Burma. The results will be displayed on 2008-08-08, which is the 20th anniversary of the 1988 uprising in Burma.
