In a recent article on the CBC.ca website, the TerraChoice organization in the United States, manager of the EcoLogo label, did an analysis of the enviornmental claims on 2219 products in the United States, Canada, Australia and Britain. They reviewed the labels and assessed whether the product claim meets the muster, did they provide details about the claim? They reviewed their claims against the various regulatory agencies in their country. They were good at identifying the problems that each product had but they didn't go far enough said one commenter. What was missing was that they did not tell anyone by the report what product failed what assessment. The CBC article said, for example, 'The survey also found environmental assertions that weren't backed up by evidence or third-party certification. One common example is facial tissues that claim various percentages of post-consumer recycled content without providing any supporting details." But they didn't tell the consumer which facial tissue product failed the assessment. Is a consumer to not purchase a facial tissue product that might pass the test just because of this report? Why didn't they spell it out? If you are still interested in reading their report, check out http://sinsofgreenwashing.org/?dl_id=2
