We are at a critical point in time, not
only in Saskatchewan, but as global citizens to become politically
active to ensure a saner path for the future with respect to our
planet. The Uranium Development Partnership
(UPD), which is largely a coalition of nuclear industry stakeholders,
came out with a glowing report to further develop uranium, build a
refinery, build a nuclear reactor, and accept wastes from the U.S.
There is also an unstated negotiation with the U.S. to do research on
nuclear weapons technologies in Sasktchewan. They make outrageous
claims in their report, particularly with respect to building a
nuclear power plant here.
The website: www.saskuranium.ca
will give you access not only to the report, but also, the so-called
public consultation hearing dates and places, hardly more than 18
days for the whole province. With such complex issues at hand, it is
great to have this brochure which is a critique of the over 100 page
report, which we taxpayers paid for.
Clean Green Regina, a coalition of
community groups who oppose nuclear development of any kind, and who
support renewable energy technology developments for the province, is
becoming a larger and larger group. There is a provincial strategy
with respect to the hearings, but also for activities from now
till the fall.
Our human community has to participate
in democracy or else we will lose it. Evidence is clear that we
must change the couse of energy use immediately. We have a
small window of time, till 2016, to reduce carbon emissions by 30%
below 1990 levels. Renewable energy technolgies are being
embraced by Germany (which is shutting down all nuclear plants),
China is spending $600 billion, even the US under Barak Obama is
spending $200 billion on renewables. Canada has spent a few
million on a few windmills and Harper and Brad Wall work in tandem to
protect the interests of big oil, and the latter also suports the
nuclear industry.
The next Clean Green meeting in Regina
will be on May 14th , Thursday, at the Unitarian Fellowship Centre,
corner of College and Angus, at 7.00 pm. We need more people to help
educate, organize events, get petitions signed, etc etc. If you would like to come you are
welcome. If you belong to a group, please forward the UDP report
brochure, and go to the Clean Green Saskatchewan site
www.Cleangreensask.ca for
a lot of good links to more information about renewable energy, and a
variety of important issues.
