U of R student Vicki Nelson will speak about her experiences in Zambia on Monday.
Each year the University of
Regina Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Chapter sends a student to Africa for 4
months. Vicki Nelson was that student and went overseas this past May. Vicki
is a fourth year Human Justice student and her placement was in Livingstone,
Zambia working with the well known organization, International Development
Enterprises (IDE). IDE Zambia focuses on increasing agriculture production for
low income, small scale farmers.
Zambia is an emerging
nation, peaceful, democratic, and slowly pulling out of desperate poverty and
lowering the rates of HIV/ AIDS within its borders. However the global
recession has affected the lives of its citizens, the willingness of donors
and painted an uncertain future for this nation. Vicki will talk about the
current economic situation in Zambia, rural livelihoods and agriculture, and
gender which truly affects all aspects of life.
Each October the
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty presents an opportunity for all
people to pause, and consider a world without poverty. Please come and listen
to how, EWB, a Canadian NGO is trying to realize this vision, and through photos
and stories listen as Vicki shares her experience as a
volunteer.
