In an announcement on Friday, November 13, four Regina projects are going to be partially funded by the Federal Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Funding. Some of these projects had been planned for over five years and it took
this long, the recession and subsequent injection of funds to get them
off the ground.
All of the appropriate people stepped forward. MP Andrew Sheer announced the federal government was providing $1.523 Million dollars to the projects. The provincial government, through Honourable Bill Hutchinson, said it intends to match this funding.
Then, Mayor Fiacco stepped forward to announce that the City had
already committed $750,000 to the Leibel Field project this past
August. and was very pleased the federal and provincial government came
forward with their funding. The other funders in the Leibel Field upgrading, the amateur soccer and football clubs of Regina, had also raised $750,000. Wascana
Centre Authority was committing $563,668 dollars to three projects,
upgrading the accessible playground at the Wascana Rehabilitation
Centre, making improvements to the accessible components at Candy Cane
Park playground and building a pedestrian bridge and trail on the west
side of the Broad Street Bridge. The last project funded today was
some upgrading of the reception area and the men's locker room and
showers at the downtown YMCA. The YMCA is committing $666,754 to their
project. Some projects not fully funded yet. The playground at
Wascana Rehab are still awaiting funds through various fundraising
efforts including donations through the Hospitals of Regina
Foundation. It took the efforts of three enthusiastic young volunteers
to initiate this project.
