Since the province’s unexpected announcement that it will
reduce the number of clean needles available to injection drug users, the harm
reduction community has stepped up its public education work. There is now a Saskatchewan
Needle Exchange Services Support Group on Facebook, with some 500 members
and a great deal of discussion with the public, some of it heated. As well, Carmichael Outreach
is planning a community forum and tour of its facilities on Nov. 26. The
evening – titled The Truths About Needle Exchange Programs – will include presentations
by a spokesperson from the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users, as well as Dr.
Garson Hunter and Dr. Marc Spooner from the University of Regina. Click on 'read more' for event details.
Here is Carmichael Outreach’s event invitation:
Come out and hear the truths about needle exchange (harm
reduction) programs. Experts in the field will be discussing research, ideas
and practices surrounding this topic. Hear from Dr. Marc Spooner (U of R), Dr.
Garson Hunter (U of R) and a spokesperson from the Vancouver Area Network of
Drugs Users. Please bring donations of food, clothing or money to donate to the
Carmichael Outreach Centre if possible.
