Stephen Harper and the NDP
Contributed by John W. Warnock
Thursday, 03 May 2012

It is a year this week since the last federal election. Active members and supporters of the New Democratic Party (NDP) celebrate this event, for their party passed the Liberals to finally become Her Majesty's Official Opposition in the House of Commons. However, others, like myself, remember that day for the fact that Stephen Harper and his Canadian Alliance/Reform Party colleagues were able to squeeze out a majority of the seats in the House of Commons. For us, it was a day of mourning.

For those who live on the prairies, it was worrisome, as we knew the Reformers better than people in the rest of Canada. For years we heard them attacking gay rights, denouncing feminists, opposing abortion and any form of gun control, opposing state-supported child care, denouncing economic support for Aboriginal communities, supporting two-tier medicare, denouncing environmentalists and insisting that climate change was bad science by communists. A great many were Christian fundamentalists, demanding public support for their own separate school systems where they wouldn’t have to teach evolution. They were strong supporters of free market capitalism and opposed collective democratic institutions like the Canadian Wheat Board. They wanted Canada to go into Iraq with the Americans.

Last chance for Masonic Temple? FRPL returns to Library Board
Written by Friends of Regina Public Library
Monday, 23 April 2012
REGINA — On Tuesday April 24 pressure will continue to be placed on the Regina Library Board to provide information about the Board’s plans for Central Branch.

The Friends of Regina Public Library (FRPL) will be making a presentation asking for more information to be released to the public.

“We recently received a letter responding in part to some of the questions we have raised. But there still remains a substantial amount of background information that has not been made publicly available,” said Joanne Havelock, FRPL chair.

Municipal Action Meetings Continue to Gain Momentum
Contributed by Jim Elliott
Wednesday, 11 April 2012
Follow up meeting to March 26th meeting to discuss Municipal Issues is being planned for

Monday, April 16th at 7:00 pm
Unitarian Centre
at the corner of Angus Street and College Avenue

People will be asked to form groups around issues of interest and develop policies or requests for action.  It is hoped that these can form the basis for questions to candidates in the fall municipal and school board elections and follow up actions taken by those same elected officials.

The Unitarian Centre is not fully accessible for those that travel on scooters.  There is a chair lift if the person can transfer to the chair and back once the lift has taken them to the upper and lower levels of the centre. Write Comment (0 Comments)

Wildlife Endangered with Tar Sands Development
Contributed by Jim Elliott
Wednesday, 11 April 2012
One of the largest intact forests on the globe, the Norther Boreal Forest in Canada, is under increasing threat of destruction.  The major reason for this is the Tar Sands development in northern Alberta.  One early symptom of that impact is the identification of nine wildlife species now being threatened by the Tar Sands development.

Tim Wise draws Regina crowds
Written by Trish Elliott
Thursday, 15 March 2012
A capacity crowd is something every event organizer hopes for, but never expects. Filling seats at four events in a row over two days? Impossible – unless, it seems, the speaker is Tim Wise, the topic is white privilege, and the location is Regina, Sask., one of Canada’s most racially divided cities.

Developers move fast on doomed apartments
Written by Trish Elliott
Tuesday, 13 March 2012

Crescent Apartment Building, left, in 1920. University of Alberta Libraries Image #PC002649.

Just 24 hours after the final roadblock to demolition was cleared away, there will be an open house to discuss a new office and retail complex to replace the 101-year-old landmark building. At last night's City Council meeting, councilors approved removal of the building's heritage status. In advance of the decision, a public feedback meeting notice for a proposed "mixed use commercial building" appeared in Saturday's Leader-Post. If members of the public have something to say about the proposal, their opportunity is today, Tuesday, March 13 at the Senior's Centre on 2134 Winnipeg Street from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Library plan under fire
Written by Trish Elliott
Tuesday, 13 March 2012
REGINA - Controversy continues to swirl around a major private-public partnership plan for Regina Public Library's central branch. "The public has many questions that should be answered by the library board," said Joanne Havelock, chair of the Friends of Regina Public Library, in a media statement.

The group urges people to attend a townhall meeting today, Tuesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. "We are calling people together to share what is known about the plans for Central Branch and the potential impact of these plans," said Havelock.

Image: Architectural drawings of a new hotel/commercial complex with a library tenant surfaced on the web last April.

Open Public Meeting on How Regina is Being Governed
Contributed by John W. Warnock
Thursday, 08 March 2012

Are you concerned about the way Regina is being governed?
Open Public Meeting about City Issues
United Way, 1440 Scarth Street (at 8th Ave.)
Monday, March 26th, 7:00 p.m.

* No Affordable Housing - There is a housing crisis in Regina: no social housing, no apartments, no affordable houses to buy, and far too many overpriced condos and expanding suburbs.

* Domed Stadium - The top dogs in the City and many current Councilors have put a first priority on building a domed football stadium, which is certain to cost taxpayers a bundle in the short and long run.

* Removal of neighbourhood Community Schools - The School Board and the City government do not recognize the importance of having schools in our local neighbourhoods, and that includes community schools.

*Exclusion of Aboriginal people. We have a large and growing Aboriginal community in our city which is excluded from just about everything.

* Privatization - More services are being contracted out or privatized costing the taxpayer more and with no increase in value.

* Seniors - Seniors on fixed incomes face high assessments on their small, older homes and rapidly increasing property taxes.

* Library Changes - Major changes are being proposed for our main library and the public has been kept completely in the dark on this issue.
